{"id":2903,"date":"2022-10-18T13:00:33","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T17:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.produceinventory.com\/blog\/?p=2903"},"modified":"2022-10-18T13:00:33","modified_gmt":"2022-10-18T17:00:33","slug":"fresh-produce-industry-updates-october-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.produceinventory.com\/blog\/fresh-produce-industry-updates-october-2022\/2022\/10\/18\/","title":{"rendered":"Fresh Produce Industry Updates: October 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Update on Fall Harvest 2022<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cpma.ca\/joint-advocacy-events\/fall-harvest \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2893\" src=\"https:\/\/www.produceinventory.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/09\/fall-harvest-300x223.png\" alt=\"fall harvest logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ensure the voice of the Canadian produce sector is heard in Ottawa!<\/p>\n<p>From <strong>November 14-16, 2022<\/strong>, CPMA and FVGC will hold the annual Fall Harvest advocacy event in Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>Fall Harvest 2022 will provide attendees with all the familiar elements of our in-person events, including issue overviews, team gatherings, meetings with key officials, an evening reception, and a featured speaker during our industry training session.<\/p>\n<p>These meetings are proven to work. Recent advocacy efforts in Ottawa have created change in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bill C-280<\/strong>, the Financial Protection for Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Farmers Act, was introduced in the House of Commons, with three of the four major political parties expressing their support for establishing a financial protection mechanism for Canadian produce sellers.<\/li>\n<li>Transport Canada announced the creation of a <strong>Supply Chain Task Force<\/strong> to address ongoing supply chain disruptions.<\/li>\n<li>Discussions with senior leadership at CFIA led to the establishment of a <strong>Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Industry &#8211; CFIA Technical Working Group<\/strong>, a new forum to address issues of impact on the industry.<\/li>\n<li>CPMA has worked with the <strong>Government of Canada to put COVID-19 protocols<\/strong> in place to allow foreign workers to continue to come to Canada and to provide financial support for employers during the quarantine period.<\/li>\n<li>Several of <strong>FVGC and CPMA\u2019s recommendations<\/strong> have been included in reports of the House of Commons Standing Committees, including the Finance and Agriculture and Agri-food Committees, and have been reflected in federal budgets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have any questions about Fall Harvest 2022, please do not hesitate to reach out to Shannon Sommerauer at CPMA (<a href=\"&#109;&#x61;&#x69;&#108;&#x74;&#x6f;&#58;&#x73;&#x73;&#111;&#x6d;&#x6d;&#101;&#x72;&#x61;&#117;&#x65;&#x72;&#64;&#x63;&#x70;&#109;&#x61;&#x2e;&#99;&#x61;\">&#x73;&#x73;&#x6f;&#x6d;&#x6d;&#x65;&#x72;&#x61;&#x75;&#x65;&#x72;&#x40;&#x63;&#x70;&#109;&#97;&#46;&#99;&#97;<\/a>) or Robyn McKee at FVGC (<a href=\"&#x6d;&#x61;&#105;&#108;t&#x6f;&#x3a;&#x72;&#109;ck&#x65;&#x65;&#64;&#102;v&#x67;&#x63;&#x2e;&#99;a\">&#x72;&#x6d;&#x63;&#x6b;&#101;&#101;&#64;&#102;vgc&#x2e;&#x63;&#x61;<\/a>). Learn more and register for <a href=\"https:\/\/cpma.ca\/joint-advocacy-events\/fall-harvest\">Fall Harvest 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[Excerpt from: CPMA Member Bulletin September 13, 2022]<\/p>\n<h3>Support for Bill C-280: Amending the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act<\/h3>\n<p>In anticipation of Fall Harvest (November 14-16), The OPMA, CPMA, QPMA and other associations in the fresh produce industry reported that they would be sending a joint letter to all MPs last month in support of Bill C-280.<\/p>\n<h4>What is Bill C-280?<\/h4>\n<p>Bill C-280 is a proposed Act to amend the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the Companies\u2019 Creditors Arrangement Act (deemed trust \u2013 perishable fruits and vegetables). Short title: Financial Protection for Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Farmers Act.
