The Government of Canada is developing a more modern and innovative food labelling system that meets the needs of consumers and industry through the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Food Labelling Modernization initiative.
The government announced on June 22, 2019 that proposed changes to labelling requirements in the Food and Drug Regulations and the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations have been pre-published in Canada Gazette, Part I, and they are seeking feedback. There will be a 75 day public consultation period with comments due September 4, 2019. Industry is strongly encouraged to review the regulations and provide comments during the consultation period.

CPMA will be consulting with our working groups to develop comments for submission to proposed changes to the regulations that impact the fresh fruit and vegetable industry, which include:
- Changes and additions to definitions
- Placement and format of packaging date
- Character heights of certain labelling requirements
- Proposed food company information requirements
- Proposed legibility and location requirements
- Changes in exemptions requiring a best before date
- Changes in date marking and storage instructions
- Repeal of certain requirements for standard container sizes
- Proposed standard container size requirements
- Definition of test market
- Proposed phased-in transition period
- Proposed documents to be incorporated by reference for best before date and standard container sizes
