Whether you’re new to the fresh produce industry or you’re thinking of upgrading your current software, here are six points to ponder:
Features: Does the software include all the features for the specific needs of my business?
- Scalability: Can the software grow with my business in terms of users, add-on modules and components?
- User-Friendly: Is the software easy to use?
- Training, Support, and Resources: Does the software provider offer in-depth training (with patient and friendly trainers), reliable 24/7 customer support, and documentation?
- Reviews and Reputation: Have you read reviews on the software and the developer?
- Updates and Maintenance: How often the software is updated and maintained?
Let us answer the last question for you first! Produce Inventory Control System (PICS) software is improved and updated constantly. Here’s what we did last month to make PICS even better:
- Added a new PO Flag to the customer file. It can be left blank or set to ‘A’ for no PO required. ‘B’ is PO required, but can have duplicates. ‘C; is PO required and duplicates not allowed.
- Made a change such that when PICS 3.0 reopens screens, it now puts up a “Please wait” window on top, then all the screens open under it, and then the new window goes away. The reason we did this is that we suspected that when the system was slow, and the screens were all being re-opened, some users were clicking on stuff before the reopen process finished, and that caused errors because PICS wasn’t ready to be used yet.
- Added a total to the bottom of the Product Chooser, so you know the value of the items selected so far.
- Adjusted the GL Transaction screen in PICS 3.0 to allow a user to save with no lines. This is useful when you want to make a posting, but then find you don’t have all the info you need. It is also handy for when you duplicate a transaction, and then decide you don’t want the lines … now you can remove the lines and save the transaction to be reused (or deleted) later.
- Added 2 new EDI System Controls to let the system know that the 850 import is running, and to block a second or subsequent instance of it from being started. There can only ever be one instance running at a time. One new system control is for iTrade, and the other is for Costco.

Helping Hands
In lieu of seasonal cards and gifts this year, we continue to donate and deliver fruits and vegetables through our Helping Hands Initiative (launched in 2020), in partnership with Ralph Pitt Produce in Walkerton. Every other month, fruits and vegetables are delivered to the Owen Sound Salvation Army, who distribute and share food with other regional Food Banks.
The Gift That Keeps On Giving
The money we raised from WaudWare Golf Tournaments is still part of the Brampton and Caledon Community Foundation account. The interest earned provides scholarships to Sheridan College students and provides funds to the Salvation Army (Honeychurch) in Brampton.
From our families to yours…
have a wonderful holiday season!
