members of the Produce Traceability InitiativeFDA Releases Final Traceability Rule

On November 15, 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its final rule on Requirements for Additional Traceability Records for Certain Foods (Food Traceability Final Rule) under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Section 204(d). This rule is effective January 20, 2023. For the applicable compliance dates, see Section VI “Effective and Compliance Dates” in the SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION section of the linked document.

The Food Traceability Final Rule is designed to facilitate faster identification and rapid removal of potentially contaminated food from the market, resulting in fewer food-borne illnesses and associated deaths.

The final rule is based on a proposal that FDA developed in 2020 for foods that have, in the past, been associated with outbreaks. Foods subject to the final rule requirements appear on the Food Traceability List.

The Produce Traceability Initiative leadership council and committees, along with the sponsoring associations, will consider the implications of the Rule to fresh produce. If required, PTI guidance documents will be amended, or new ones developed, to assist industry in compliance.
