Support the passage of Bill C-280 in the Senate
Bill C-280, the Financial Protection for Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Farmers Act, is currently under consideration in the Canadian Senate. The Bill has now been referred for consideration at the Senate Banking Committee, with Committee meetings to follow in the coming weeks.
If passed, Bill C-280 would establish a deemed trust mechanism for fresh produce growers and sellers in Canada, ensuring payment in the case of buyer bankruptcy.
Last week, CPMA sent a joint association letter to all Senators. The OPMA is one of the 35 national and regional associations that signed their name to the letter.
Along with the letter, a new “Q & A” infographic was sent to provide further information on how the deemed trust would work in Canada and why it’s so critical to the fresh produce sector. More information and resources can be found here.

CPMA News and Industry Updates
Share your thoughts on food loss and waste
In 2019, Second Harvest released the first national estimate of food loss and waste (FLW) along the entire value chain.
On the study’s fifth anniversary, Second Harvest has engaged Value Chain Management International (VCMI) to examine changes that have occurred in FLW since 2019 and the reasons for such changes.
This important study will:
- Benchmark Canadian FLW against estimates published in 2019, and
- Quantify the GHG emissions and water footprint associated with FLW.
CPMA and Second Harvest would appreciate your participation in this survey which takes approximately 5 to 8 minutes. All responses are completely confidential.
Deadline: Wednesday, May 31.
