[Note that this article applies to Windows 2008 Server]
Font Sizes
PICS 3.0 uses Segoe UI 12 pt for captions and Inconsolata Medium 12 pt for data fields. Note that the screens can be stretched or shrunk and the fonts size will increase/decrease when you do so. There are a few exceptions though. The lists currently are not stretch/shrinkable … we have plans to address this, but it is not done yet. The words on Menus is controlled by Windows and not PICS; see the steps below to adjust the size of them. The text in the various “pop-up” boxes (for example, on the stock list in the top right corner) is also controlled by Windows and not PICS; see the steps below to adjust the size of them.
Adjust for specific users – Here are the steps to adjust the fonts in the menus and pop-up boxes if you want to do it by user, (i.e. not system wide):
- On the PICS Server, right click a blank area on the desktop and select Personalize from the bottom of the popup menu, or go to Control Panel and choose Personalization
- Choose Window Color and Appearance
- If it is not already, select Color scheme “Windows Classic”*
- Click Advanced
- * – Note that on this screen it says that changes made here may only apply to Windows Classic theme. This is why we said to set it to that above
- For pop-up boxes:
- Choose Message Box from the Drop Down
- Change the Font size from 8 to 12 (to match the PICS default size)
- Change the Font from MS Sans Serif size 8 to Segoe UI size 12. You can experiment with the font type here if you want to. We recommend Segoe UI (which is what PICS uses), but you could also use Arial, Inconsolata Medium (which is what PICS uses for data), MS Sans Serif or whatever else you want to try.
- For menus:
- Choose Menu from the Drop Down
- Change the Font from MS Sans Serif size 8 to Segoe UI size 12. Again, you can try other fonts here – see above for details.
- Click Ok
- Click Ok again on the Appearance Settings window
- Close Control Panel\Personalization
Font Clarity
If fonts appear fuzzy (pixelated) in PICS 3.0, you can try turning on Windows ClearType. This is done for each user, we are not sure if there is a way to do this system wide, To do so, go to:
- Control Panel
- Personalization
- Windows Colour and Appearance
- Effects
- Check off “Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:” and select “ClearType” from the drop down list.
- Click OK, and then OK again to close the Appearance settings.
You can learn more about changing font sizes and enhancing clarity by clicking on PICS Help when you’re logged into PICS.
